Nutrition Science

Macros, micros, research-backed insights and busting nutrition myths.

80 articles

Nutrition headlines change weekly; the underlying science moves much more slowly and carefully. This section digs into what the research actually shows about macronutrients, micronutrients, metabolism, and the methods behind the studies themselves — why observational findings differ from trials, why single-food headlines mislead, and how to weigh evidence rather than absorb hype.

You'll find explainers on protein requirements, fats and cholesterol, fibre and the gut microbiome, vitamins and minerals, and critical takes on persistent myths. We cite primary research, distinguish 'associated with' from 'causes', and flag uncertainty honestly. The aim is a working scientific literacy that makes you harder to mislead — by marketing or by headlines.

Nutrition Science: Common Questions

Why does nutrition advice keep changing?▾

Mostly it doesn't — the core guidance (vegetables, fibre, legumes, less ultra-processed food) has been stable for decades. What changes are headlines built on single studies, often observational, preliminary, or done in animals. Nutrition research is genuinely hard: long timescales, self-reported diets, confounding lifestyles. Reliable conclusions come from the accumulated body of evidence, not the latest paper.

How much protein do I really need per day?▾

The baseline recommendation is 0.8g per kg of body weight daily, which prevents deficiency in most adults. Research suggests higher intakes — commonly 1.2–1.6g/kg, sometimes more — may better support muscle maintenance in older adults and people training regularly. Most people in Western countries already exceed the baseline; distribution across meals may matter as much as the total.

Are eggs and dietary cholesterol bad for your heart?▾

For most people, dietary cholesterol raises blood cholesterol far less than once assumed — saturated and trans fats have a larger effect. Major guidelines no longer set a strict cholesterol limit, and moderate egg intake appears compatible with heart health in most studies. Individuals with existing high cholesterol or diabetes should follow personalised medical advice.

What's the difference between observational studies and clinical trials?▾

Observational studies track what people eat and what happens to them — they reveal associations but can't prove cause, because diet correlates with income, exercise, and smoking. Randomised controlled trials assign diets and isolate cause, but are short and expensive in nutrition. Strong conclusions need both: consistent associations plus plausible mechanisms and supportive trial data.
