How to Use the Grocery List

One list, kept in sync with what you actually cook.

The Grocery List tracks what you need to buy — and, unlike a plain checklist, tracks quantity and expiry, and can update itself when you cook.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Add an item

Enter a name, an optional quantity and unit, a category, and an optional expiry date, then save it to the list.

  2. 2

Or add items from a photo

Use the photo upload option to add items from a photo of a receipt or your groceries — the tool reads the photo and proposes items for you to confirm.

  3. 3

    Mark an item finished

When you've fully used or bought something, mark it finished — it's removed from the list, with a 5-second Undo if that was a mistake.

  4. 4

    Or partially consume it

If you only used some of an item, use the partial-consume option to lower its quantity instead of removing it entirely.

  5. 5

    Filter your view

Switch between All, Expiring and Expired to see what needs attention first.

  6. 6

    Turn on Auto-Decrement

Enable this toggle to have the list update itself: marking a Meal Plan recipe as cooked will subtract its ingredients from your grocery list automatically.

Tips

  • Turn on Auto-Decrement once and forget it — it's what keeps this list in sync with the Meal Plan without manual edits.
  • If you accidentally mark something finished, the Undo option only appears in the toast right after — act on it quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between marking an item finished and partially consuming it?

Finished removes the item from the list entirely. Partial consume reduces its quantity but keeps the item on the list — use it when you've only used some of what you had.

Does adding a recipe to my Meal Plan add its ingredients to this list automatically?

No — that only happens when you mark the meal cooked, and only if Auto-Decrement is turned on.

Can I add items by photographing a receipt?

Yes, the photo upload option reads a photo of groceries or a receipt and proposes items for you to confirm before they're added.
